Star Wars: Empire At War Demo
Yep, I’m going through the demos and free downloads this weekend.
Anyway, I did the incredibly long tutorial for this new RTS and it seems like it might actually be quite good.
It doesn’t seem to be doing anything too new and it doesn’t look all that great but it seems to play smoothly and, well, you can be the Empire and go round blowing up rebel bases and slaughtering Jawas. The galactic strategy Interface looks a bit fiddly for those of us not sitting with our noses against the monitor, though.
Anyway, I suppose I should actually try playing the game part of the demo at some point, but that tutorial wore me out.
Difficult to judge RTS games quickly, anyway, I suppose. Should probably wait for some reviews.

Started and completed in one thoroughly enjoyable seven-and-a-half hour session. Bit buggy, but generally solid. Lots of stormtroopers to kill. No complaints here. (Apart from having to play the PS3 version because the 360 version was out of stock. Still, I assume they’re pretty much the same.)

PURE AWESOME. I mean, it appears to be a good game, maybe not great, certainly more than decent, but it’s also PURE AWESOME. I like Star Wars, you see. And this is very, very Star Wars.

As well as the 360 version, I also played some of the DS version. Unlike last year’s terrible effort, this one works properly and is very playable. A huge amount of stuff seems to have been fitted into the DS cart. The levels are massive, the graphics are great and it sounds just like it

Another game that’s great for co-op gaming with the wife. Like Mario, it looks lovely – but not as polished. Like Mario, it sounds great – but it’s using the movie’s sounds. Unlike Mario, it feels slightly clunky to control and deaths often seem random. That’s not a problem, though. The joy of the game

I’ve played it as well – the single player campaign is only one space battle and one land battle though, so it doesn’t take much longer than the tutorial. The graphical quality wasn’t that fantastic – it chugged a bit on my machine for no particular reason that I could see.
The strategic side looks like it could end up being like the War of the Worlds game, where you end up with a fixed front line and build up big armies before launching an assault. The space battle bits were nifty though – using the death star might be fun.
