Played more of this with my wife over my extended birthday weekend. We’re both utterly hopeless at it, but we have a lot of fun.

We’ve got as far as the first castle in world two, but have died there more times than I care to remember. We did get to the boss once, but we both managed to get ourselves killed. We’ll get him next time, though. (Possibly.)

Wow. My Wii still works after all this time. A fabulous friend of my wife’s gave her this game on an extended loan, so on Saturday morning I checked the Wii, put the controllers on to charge, did the system update, etc. Then in the afternoon we played the game together.

I was Mario, she was a blue Toad. We certainly had a lot of fun with it, but I’m just slightly worried that it might be a bit to difficult for us. It seems to be easier when there’s only one of you playing, which seems wrong. Still, that’s only a minor worry for now and we didn’t stop playing until it was time for Doctor Who.

It’s really nice to have another game where we can both play cooperatively at the same time, too. We don’t do enough of that. Competitive games don’t work too well in our house.

So, Nintendo announced that they’d be sending us Nintendogs to live in our Animal Crossing houses and I got very excited for a couple of seconds, as my head filled with images of little puppies running around my feet and leaping up at me when I got home.

Then I realised that they’d just be furniture items, but assumed that when activated with the A button would have short sounds and animations, like a lot of Animal Crossing furniture. Maybe the labrador would roll over on his belly, maybe the chihuahua would start yapping at you, that sort of thing.

Yesterday I got my first Nintendog and it was disappointing, even with my lowered expectations. There aren’t any animations, it’s just a static, basic piece of furniture that does nothing. This may be a technical limitation with the way new items get added to the game over the Internet, but it’s still a bit of a downer.

It does look cute, though, and I shall keep a small collection of dogs in my basement.
