I’ve been a Valkyrie a couple of times and done reasonably well both times. By my standards.

I also read about the pet testing thing for cursed items. I was about ready to give up on some nice armor last night until my dog finally stepped on it.

And I’m finally noticing when I’m hungry now. Most of the time.

They are, IMHO, hands down the easiest beginner character in NetHack. The +3 shield helps a lot in the early game, and they have very good melee capabilities, including the ability to become expert in daggers, which is pretty handy. You should really try going with a Valkyrie. They are, IMHO, hands down the easiest beginner character in NetHack.
