I’m not sure yet. It’s certainly enjoyable fun and adds a lot to the game, but I’m not sure if the fiddly bits are genuinely annoying or if I’m just a bit rubbish. Possibly both, thinking about it.

Bird Strike

Achievement unlocked!

Anyway, you still have to zoom up and up, higher and higher, but now there’s no falling back down to consider. You can fall back down a little way, but beyond that it’s game over. Which is all as it should be.

If you’ve bought Bird Strike – and there’s no reason not to, quite frankly – it’s an excellent update, but I don’t think it quite pushes the game into the upper reaches of the “must have” iPhone games. It’s a fine game, but the iPhone’s got millions of those pesky little buggers. There’s no reason not to buy this, as I said, but there’s also no compelling reason to choose this over dozens of other equally good games.

Well, I finished level nine. That’s almost the same thing. Also I have a Yellowstone baseball and a crocheted Peter Davison on my desk.

Proof

The Fifth Doctor and a Yellowstone baseball. Proof.

I’m pretty special. Yeah.

Bird Strike

Yes, I am awesome. Thank you.

Anyway, after level nine I went to level ten… oh, wait… no I didn’t. Looks like there’s only nine levels, which was a bit of shock. (And a secret one, according to the achievement list. I assume that’s for getting golds on all levels, or something, which is never going to happen.)

Worth 59p, though, despite the brevity and frustration. It’s a good little game. I wouldn’t have stuck with it if it wasn’t.

Yes, level nine.

And only level nine.

Bird Strike

Bird Strike, level nine.

Because… I… just… can’t… beat… it.

It made me say, “Gnnnnnnnnnngh.” And other things of that nature.

I’m sure I’ll get there – eventually.

Not as good as Twin Blades for playing while the TV is on, but I did my best. I’ve done eight levels now up to Silver standard (with a Gold medal for the first level), but I’m struggling a bit on the ninth. There are some tricky paths to negotiate and a limited number of fireworks. I’ve been restarting quite often.

Bird Strike

Ouch indeed, little bird.

This another case of having to learn levels. You’ll never be able to find your way to the top without hitting some obstacles using reflexes alone, you really have to know what’s coming. You might not need to restart the level – there are always more fireworks than you need to get to the top, at least so far – but you’ll definitely be giving your bird a headache.

Unlike either of those, when you reach a certain point you start flying back down, trying to hit all the obstacles that you tried to avoid on your ascent.

When you hit the ground, if you’ve done well enough, you’re awarded a medal based on your score. If you get a medal, you get to move on to the next level.

Simple.

Bird Strike

Hang on... why does a bird need firework-power to fly?

Simple and pretty brilliant, actually. Well-presented, excellent OpenFeint integration, easy to control, it’s pretty much everything you could want from this type of game. (There’s even an endless mode on the way, according to the developer, which isn’t essential but would be nice.)
