Flick Kick Football

Guess what you have to do here.

Brilliant, evil game. Whenever I start it up I seem to lose hue amounts of time in the blink of an eye.

And now it’s even got a new game mode where you have to hit targets.

Bye, bye life.

They were 59p each, so I bought them all. (Not all at once, mind, but over three days.)

irst up, Flick Kick Football, an insanely brilliant game from the makers of Flick Kick Field Goal. (Which used to be excellent, but which has been kicked out of the door and into the street with nothing but the clothes on its back now Flick Kick Football has appeared.)

Ignore my high score in the corner there, it's much better now.

There’s a ball, probably some cardboard-cutout defenders and a goal. You flick your finger to kick the ball, adding curve to get round the obstacles and into the goal. It feels just right and the quest for higher and higher scores left my battery panting and gasping for breath. (I bought it on Friday evening. By Saturday afternoon I’d played for three hours.)

The illusion is broken if you try to kick the ball slowly, so don’t do that, but otherwise I don’t have a single complaint to make. Brilliantly presented, tuned to perfection and 59p – it’s what iPhone gaming’s all about.

Just kick after kick after kick. It should get old a lot faster than it does. Didn’t beat my own high score, so the frustration was there, but it didn’t get dull.

Flick Kick Field Goal

Fly, my pretty, fly!

Anyway, much as I’d love to write a long, worthwhile entry about the game, it’s just kicking a ball over some goal posts again and again, so there’s not a whole lot to say. I can tell you that it’s an excellent game, but I’m not getting any insights into the nature of gaming or the meaning of life from it.

This is one of those games where I beat my own high score, feel very proud of myself, then go to check the global leaderboards and cry.

Flick Kick Field Goal

Hooray! I'm great!

I’ve tried all the game modes now and they all offer something different and worthwhile. I think Sudden Death is my favourite – there’s no stopping or starting, just kick after kick after kick. You kick the ball and if you make the kick your score goes up. If you don’t, it resets to zero. There’s no downtime at all.

It’s basically Paper Toss Evolved, or something, where you, well, flick the screen to kick the ball over the field and into the goal. Hence, you know, the name.

Flick Kick Field Goal

Watch out for that wind!

It feels just right, it varies the angle and wind nicely, has a good number of game modes, OpenFeint integration and is very polished indeed. If you missed it for free, bad luck, but I don’t think you’ll regret buying it. A great little quick game – it’s almost worth a spot in the dock.
