Last night I used the “Just Drive” setting a few times, jumping into to random mode with a random car. It’s good for when you’re not quite sure what you want to do, but I ended up driving cars I didn’t much like and not doing very well at all. Ah well.
Just been playing the old OutRun 2 tracks, no SP tracks for me this weekend. Didn’t get any new high scores, but after the first couple of races I seemed to get back up to my old skill level, or thereabouts.
One quick go at OutRun 2, easiest route. That should have been simple, but I barely scraped over the finish line before my time ran out. I guess I got myself used to 360 handling… or maybe I was just rubbish last night.
A huge event in my OutRun life last night. I tried manual gears for the first time. Mainly to see if I could improve my Time Trial times with them. While they’re a lot easier to use than I was expecting, I’m finding it hard to recover when things go wrong. I might be able to improve my times with a bit of practice, but I’m some way behind that so far. It’s interesting, anyway – and I got an Achievement for using them.
Got a couple more Achievements yesterday. I thought they’d be hard, but I got the “get 1,000,000 points” one on my second try (TIP: put the difficulty of the game to Normal, it’s on Very Easy by default) and then got the “go at over 300kph for ten seconds” one randomly while trying time trials. I had been trying to get the “complete Time Attack in less than 4m30s” achievement, but I’m way, way off that. I think my best is about 4m38s or something. That’s a lot to try and catch up.
OutRun 2 is one of my very favourite games of all time. I utterly adore it. So I’ve been saving up my points for this release.
And it’s lovely. It’s only got the SP courses – the original courses better appear as DLC soon, as they’re just that little bit better – but that’s good enough for now. I haven’t done much so far, just played through the game five times to hit the five different goals, but it’s OutRun 2 and therefore lovely. I was sighing with happiness as I drifted through the stages. Lovely.
I haven’t tried any online races yet and the friends leaderboards need fixing, like, now, but 800 points for OutRun 2 SP sitting on my hard drive? Bargain!
Heart Attack mode, no new high scores or anything. Not much to blog about, really.
Mainly played Heart Attack mode. Got high scores on a couple of the SP routes for the first time. Annoyingly, I always muck up one stage – and it’s always a different one. It’s not uncommon for me to end one stage per go with a negative number of hearts. I need more consistency.
I haven’t bothered doing a Top Ten Best Games Ever this year yet. If I do, I know this will have to be on there.
After years of on-and-off trying, yesterday I finally completed the OutRun2SP 1-Stage Continuous goal. An actual, honest-to-goodness, fist-in-the-air moment. Go me! Then I decided to try some of the mission based modes, which I’ve hardly touched. And then my battery ran out. D’oh.
Five minutes of failure with OutRun was the only gaming I got done last night.
When I say failure, I mean it. I was racing a rival and he killed me on stage four, leaving me with an E grade for the race I attempted. And it was a very easy one – the first race in the second set of stages. Dear me.
I suppose I could explain that in greater detail, but everybody’s played OutRun 2006, right? Right?
If you haven’t, you should have done. It’s one of the best games ever, you know.
