Football Manager Handheld 2010 (iPhone)
Apr 19th
A weekend of highs and lows. Mostly highs. After a bit of a wobble we started winning more than we were losing and, at the time of writing, we’ve climbed up to second in the league. Not bad after our woeful start. (Let’s hope the Astros can do a similar thing over in baseball-land.)
Anyway, here’s some pictures.
The most annoying thing about the injury is that I should have prevented it. Jason Norville was getting tired, but he’s so very, very good that I didn’t want to be without him. So I decided to play him for the first half and replace him at half time. In the forty-third minute he picked up his three-month injury.
Still, after another rebuilding (i.e. losing) phase after his injury, we seem to be back to winning again. Maybe it won’t be a complete disaster.

My wife, on Twitter, last night:
*sigh* @thatrevchap has stupid Football Manager on his stupid iPhone. I miss him.
Also:
He seems to take personal offense every time the other team gets a goal.
I only played two matches last night! Two!
The first didn’t go so well. A great start, but then… aaargh!
The second, though, was my first win of the season.
Hopefully it’s the start of something good. (Though I did get a bit frustrated and applied for a new job in a fit of pique, so maybe I won’t be at Oxford for long.)

It’s called FM 2010 in the App Store, but the title screen says Football Manager Handheld 2010, so I’m going with that. It’s rather more descriptive, after all.
Well, you know what you’re getting. It’s Football Manager… on the iPhone. Cut down from the PC version, but very familiar to anyone who’s played the PSP version, the only really important thing is the interface. First impressions suggest that it’ll be fine once you get used to it, but it’s unfamiliar and not especially intuitive.
(There’s a separate manual app that you can download for free – I’ve had to refer to it a couple of times.)
Still, I’ve managed to play a few games, change my formation and change around my squad, so it seems to be workable.
I took over Oxford United because there’s no random option that I could see. (Incidentally, there’s also no obvious way to get team info before you select them, which is a shame.) They come with a default 4-3-3 formation, so I left that alone for my first friendly match.
We lost 3-0.
So I decided to go back to the old standby of 4-4-2 for the next friendly.
We lost 3-0.
Hmm. I stuck with 4-4-2 for the next match, but focused on attacking.
We were down to 3-0 within twenty minutes. Oof.
Near the end of the game, though, there was a glimmer of hope as Jason Norville scored a late consolation goal. That’s something. I think I need to see how things go at the start of the season and see if I can work out a way to get the best from my squad. I’m a firm believer that midfield is what counts in football so I’m going to concentrate on that. There’s still time to bring people in.
Either that or I’ll look for a new job.

Been very much enjoying this. I even started a game in Manager mode. It’s not a full management game, by any means, but it’ll let me go through a few seasons with a team instead of just playing one-off games and doing the odd cup.
I started with Torquay, as I’ve played them in Football Manager. Their £15M transfer budget seemed a bit high. You know, just a little. (I tried to buy David Beckham, because he’s only worth £14M, but he refused to come to the club, saying he was too good for us. More importantly, their name breaks the score display at the top of the screen.
I couldn’t live with that, so I started another game as Aston Villa, which gets nicely shortened to AV and looks fine. So far we’ve played three games and won two. Interestingly, the game doesn’t seem to randomise fixtures – I’m just playing through the Premier League in alphabetical order.
So, yes, the game’s a bit rough around the edges, but on the pitch I’ve got no complaints, and that’s where it counts.

Wow. I’m drained. I’ve just spent my lunchtime taking Aston Villa through the FA Cup. We beat such amazing teams as Colchester, Aldershot and Preston on the way through to a final against the mighty Grimsby.
One all after normal time, Carew scored in the first half of extra time to put us ahead and we carried that lead through to the end.
Hooray!
We’re winners!
Anyway, it’s a good game, though not perfect. The AI can do some very strange things at times. I’m not sure if that’s because of the difficulty level or just because it’s a bit rubbish. The highlights sometimes show completely the wrong thing. And I have honestly never heard such a repetitive commentary.
But the controls work well, it looks nice, it’s full of content and you get a fun, tense game of footie out of it. I can’t compare it to any other iPhone football games, because I’ve not played them, but I like this one.
Here’s a picture of the first goal I ever scored.

Four quid this cost me. I wanted to try out the Ultimate Team card game thing without buying FIFA 09, which is a fair bit more expensive.
First impressions are that the interface for the card stuff is incredibly confusing and I can’t seem to score a goal, even on the easiest difficulty. I guess I should read the manual to see what the buttons are. I think I’ve got them pretty much worked out, but I bet there’s a lot I’m missing.
I only played it for a very short time to check the disc worked, mind.

Been away for a couple days for a funeral. Fair amount of PSP time. We won the league and got promoted to League Two. Over the summer most of my good players got poached again, leaving me with no players who could play on the right of midfield. I had to spend too much on rubbish-looking players just to fill gaps, but we won our first game of the season. Just.

Down in second, new injuries in bad places, out of the FA Cup after a terrible display against Oldham, things looking grim.
Next game, against first-place York at home.
Didn’t hold out much hope, but in an incredible match that saw each side have a player sent off, we won 7-2. Now we’re top of the table again. Hurrah!

My save game got corrupted! Luckily, I save after every match and rotate two save files, so I managed to load just before my game against Grays. Which I drew again. D’oh.

Down to second after a draw with Grays. Grumble. I wish York would lose a game or two.
