2006 FIFA World Cup (PSP)
Jun 16th
Very early first impressions after one game are good.
I didn’t read the manual, so just jumped in and tried to work out the controls as I played. Got the basics down easily. Played as England against Hungary, which should have been easy. It was eventually, but at 70 minutes we were a goal down and down to 10 men after Rio Ferdinand got sent off for another sliding tackle from behind. (Square button.)
But then Rooney slammed two home and Owen got the third and all ended happily.

Oh! So close!
Should have won another Villa vs Birmingham ‘friendly’ 1-0, but a stupidly placed goal kick let them qualise right near the end of the game.
My fault entirely.

Yes, it really would be easier if I put the format in my post titles. So I shall from now on.
Anyway, I dug this out of it’s barely-played grave and have just given it a quick go. Maybe it’s just because I’m not using a phone keypad, but it seems quite lovely in comparison to Real Football.
However, I played as Villa and lost 2-0 to Birmingham, so I hate it.

A worthy attempt at a mobile phone football game, sadly let down by the phone keypad.
GBA version, please.

Bought the Official Xbox mag just for this.
I’m not disappointed. Well, if it’s final code, I’ll be slightly disappointed. The sound effects need some work – bigger roar when goal goes in! – and the automatic player switching goes mental at some points when it can’t decide who to pick.
But it’s simple, fast and I can actually play it! The demo must be set on the easiest difficulty, because I was booting goal after goal in. Makes a pleasant change from the FIFAs and Pro Evos of the world, where I seem to have to play for five hours before I even get a shot on target.
Hooray!

Played it twice. Didn’t come close to scoring either time. Bah.
Found myself liking it less the more I played, actually. Thought it seemed decent at first and then I just got frustrated with it.
I want an arcade footie game. Give me SWOS on Live Arcade, please.

I decided not to apply for the Southampton job and was rewarded with a win against Bournemouth and a draw against Hull. In both matches the opposition goalkeeper won Man of the Match. Bastards.

First two matches of the season this morning. League One now, remember, so I wasn’t hoping for much. Came away with an unlucky draw and a lucky win, which isn’t bad for starters.
However, Southampton have sacked their manager. I’ve got all morning to decide whether or not to apply for the job. (Er, while I write some PHP code to talk to a Microsoft SQL database. I’m not just going to be sitting around pondering.) It would take me up to the Championship, but Southampton’s finances are insecure so I might be stuck with a rubbish squad and no money. I had told myself I’d apply for any job just to get away from Torquay, but after two half-decent games this morning I’m thinking that maybe I should stick with them.
Hmm… chin stroking time and no mistake.

Ah. No transfer budget. Well, £3K, which is as good as nothing.
Played my three pre-season friendlies. Not good results.
This coming season may be… tricky.

End of my first season.
English League Cup: Second Round
English FA Cup: Fourth Round
English League Two: 3rd
Yes, third. We climbed that far back up the table by the end, helped no end by Robinson turning into a goal-scoring god for the last few matches of the season. Only third on goal difference, mind. In fact, we had exactly the same won, drawn and lost stats as Bury, the team who came fourth. We also had scored the same number of goals. The only difference was that they’d let in twenty (!) more goals than we had.
And third means automatic promotion. So now League One beckons. It’s quite scary. I don’t think I’m going to hope for more than survival. I wonder if I’ll get any transfer funds?
Connell, one of my best strikers, won the young player of the year award for League Two. I’d be more pleased if he hadn’t broken his leg a couple of weeks before the end of the season. We’ll be lucky to see him in action this year.
