Pokemon Diamond (DS)
Apr 29th
I’ve done a couple of online trades with players in Japan. Got myself a Skuntank and Murkrow for a Zubat and a Geodude. I think I did pretty well there.
I also just entered and won a contest, once I figured out how the dancing worked.
Can’t seem to fight the gym leader in my current town, so I’m heading off to see where else I can go.

So, I got my second gym badge, hooray.
I also dipped a tow into the online trading scene. Well, I’ve put up my low-level Zubat Batpants and asked for a Skuntank in return. Somehow, somehow, I don’t think I’ll get any takers.

So, I choose the little penguin guy as my first Pokemon and I’m quite happy with the choice. Though I am currently wanting to evolve a Magikarp, which means I’ll have two water-based Pokemon in my main team, which isn’t a very good idea. Hmm. I am musing.
It’s just Pokemon… again. But it’s also just better enough to not feel like a waste.
Pokemon Ranger (DS)
Nov 2nd
Well, I have now played Pokemon Ranger and from first impressions it seems to be an object lesson in how not to take a franchise to the DS.
They’ve taken Pokemon and changed it so instead of turn-based battles you now have to use the stylus to draw circles round Pokemon. (The number of circles depends on the strength of the Pokemon.) If the Pokemon touches or attacks the circles you’re drawing or if you lift the stylus from the screen before you’ve drawn enough of them, then the circles dissapear and you have to start over.
It doesn’t sound too bad on the face of it, but as soon as I first tried to draw two complete circles round a Pokemon that was zig-zagging round the screen, I knew something was wrong. But what? You have to draw with inhuman speed around a target whose movements can’t be predicted, which is difficult. Difficult’s not always bad, though, that’s not the real problem. No, the main problem is that drawing circles really, really quickly is just no fun.
Somebody should really have noticed that during development, I feel.
You can try it, too, without a DS, to get an idea. Get a pen and a piece of paper. Start drawing circles really, really fast. Then get a parent or guardian to slap your hand away from the paper at random intervals. Then stop and get a friend to witter on about Snorlax and Pikachu at great length. Then go back to drawing circles. Repeat until your soul dries out and crumbles into dust.
Anyone who loves Pokemon may be able to get through the battles to experience the world and story, but the gameplay is fundamentally broken and without the Pokemon nobody would think of giving this a second glance.
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon was a slight disappointment, due to its simplicity and slow start, but Ranger is just plain awful. Replacing button presses with stylus actions isn’t a good idea unless it improves the fun factor of a game. I thought we’d got past the stylus-for-the-sake-of-it part of the DS’s lifespan. It seems not.

Still playing this.
Still not quite sure why.
Got some new team members this evening. That’s nice.

Well, I can now recruit new members for my rescue team. At least, I can in theory. Apart from the one given to me as part of the story I’ve not managed to find any more.
It’s got a bit tiring to be honest, so far there’s not enough meat to the dungeon crawling and the crawls are too short compared to the time spent buggering around in town sorting out items and getting new jobs and such.
Hopefully just a problem in the initial stages.
Oh, and there’s a surprising amount of story in the game, too. Not very interesting story, but it’s there.

My first roguelike.
No, it’s not my first roguelike, that’s what it should be subtitled. (Except making the name of the game any longer might cause something to collapse.)
Anyway, you’re not an adventurer, you’re a Pokemon. You don’t find scrolls and swords, you find berries and gummies.
The levels are not huge and sprawling, just small and compact.
But it’s fun enough and I’m sure it’ll get more complicated later on. And it gave me an interview at the beginning and told me I was bulbasaur. Fair enough, I guess. I chose Pikachu to my companion, because, well, he’s Pikachu, I guess. (I’m sure I should have thought about which type of Pokemon would be best complement my grass type Pokemon and all that, but, you know, come on.)
Anyway: fun.
Pokemon Trozei

What better thing to do when waiting for the Cup Final to kick off than beat the final boss in a Pokemon-themed puzzle game?
Well, not so final as I’ve now unlocked a hard mode.
The Guardian reviewed this game today and completely slagged it off. Extreme wrongness there.
Pokemon Trozei

Hooray! After nearly an hour of trying I got Huge Storage 5 done. Up to 51.6% of the Pokemon caught now.
Only the final boss left and Adventure mode will be done.
