Call of Duty 4 (360)

Just the single player campaign today. A great variety of gameplay styles (well, a great variety within the limited scope of a modern war-themed first person shooter) and some amazing set pieces. Great stuff.

More online play. Saw a couple of friends online for a little bit, but I mainly played randoms. (And made good use of the Mute button.) It was great fun, even though I was a bit rubbish, and I got up to level six. I only need eleven more kills with my AK47 to unlock a red dot laser sight, which I guess might be nice.

Last night was the weekly BETEO vs UGVM match, which this week was Call of Duty 4. I had a couple of goes at Free-For-All with strangers before the match and got slaughtered horribly. And then got slaughtered horribly when we started playing Team Deathmatch. I was on the UGVM side to make up numbers and it seems that the BETEO players are much, much better. After they killed us a few times we just decided to completely mix the teams up, which worked a lot better and made for some very close games.
I was awful, though. Just kept dying over and over again. Except for one map that was just lots of corridors and small rooms. I had a shotgun in that one and managed to kill eight people. Pretty cool.
Great fun, but I really need some practice.

Pew pew! Pew pew!
This seems to be fundamentally different from most first person shooters, where the aim is to kill everyone and move on. In Call of Duty 4 I do shoot people, sure, but it’s more about staying alive under heavy fire than clearing the areas of enemies. It’s a fundamentally different style of game, which is probably what makes it feel so fresh.

I’ve had this sitting around for a while now, but only started it last night.
You know how most shooters have you running around corridors, with a few memorable set pieces thrown in? This is the opposite. Huge firefights and amazing scenes linked by short runs from place to place. One moment you’re escaping a sinking ship, then you’re sniping some Russians, then running for your life across a town square filled with burning cars, then fighting it out in a TV station in the Middle East. All those things happen in the first hour, with more besides.
It’s really very good indeed. So intense, though, that after an hour or so I had to stop playing because I was completely worn out.
I’d make a rubbish soldier.

After some more Free-For-All, I decided to try some Team Deathmatch. I was comfortably the worst person in my team in all the rounds I played, but I wasn’t way down below the next-worst person, which… is… some… comfort.
Gnng.

I just tried out some games of Free-For-All to get used to the controls and had a good time. Got promoted a few times. Created a class and added a grenade launcher to my AK-47, but couldn’t work out how to fire it.
And then I quit out, which seemed to end the game, because I was the host. I hadn’t realised that. Oops. I feel bad now.

Well, I did that last level again and it still refused to believe I’d completed it. And it was still showing the Russian campaign as unplayed.
So I’ve deleted my save game and I’m going to have to start again. I think I can get away with doing the Russian cmapaign on Hardened difficulty, but everything else I’m going to have to do on Veteran.
I think the problem is that you can get to the main menus before you sign in to Live, so it got confused somehow. But it’s still very odd and not a little annoying. At least it’s good.

GAH!
What the…?
I thought something was odd when I started playing today and it had reset the y-axis to univerted, but I played through to the end of The Battle of El Alamein. But it didn’t give me the achievement for completing it and then dumped me back to the start of the Russian campaign.
I turned off the console and turned it back on and my save game is completely knackered. It’s showing The Battle of El Alamein as uncompleted and apparently I’ve done none of the Russian campaign. The Russian campaign that took me many, many hours and which I have achievements for, to show I finished it on the hardest difficulty level.
Stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid bloody game.

Hooray! Thanks to some good advice from a chap on the rllmuk (no idea, frankly) forum I manged to get past the sticking point and managed to complete the Russian campaign. I’m quite proud of myself, even if it was little more than dogged persistence that got me through.
Done the first level of the first mission in the Brit campaign. It’s always nice to play a game with the word ‘wanker’ in it.
