Football Manager Handheld 2008 (PSP)
Jan 8th
Two games this lunchtime. Luxury!
We won one and drew one, which isn’t bad. We were losing the second until the 87th minute, so that was a very welcome draw.
Also, I was runner-up for the Blue Square Premier Manager of the Month award. I felt very proud.
The biggest news, though, is that Purcell has broken his toe and will be out for at least three weeks. That’s quite a major problem, as he’s one of my top players. Still, could be worse. Three weeks isn’t so bad in the long run.
I hope we get a long break between matches soon. My players are absolutely knackered and many are starting games with condition percentages in the low nineties. McPhee finished the last game with his condition down in the sixties, which is dangerously low.
Right, I’ve checked, and the next match is only a few days later. No break. It’s against Torquay, who I’d probably not be able to beat with my best team, so I’ve decided that I’m going to rest every player I can who’s tired and field what’s not far off being a b-team for the next match. (I actually have a reserve team and I’d dearly love to promote someone from that team into the main squad, but they’re all greyed out, so I can’t.) I’m still stuck with knackered players on the left in both midfield and defence, though, as that’s where my injuries are right now. It’s a hard life.

You know you’ve had a good match when you win 2-0 and the opposition keeper is Man of the Match.
A good away win at Kidderminister, then, which takes up to fourth in the table.
I’d like to play more, but each match lasts about twenty minutes and now lunchtime is over.
It’s amazing how exciting the game is, given that you’re just reading text and looking at numbers for twenty minutes, with a bare minimum of interactivity. I’m still not quite sure how they do it.

Hmm, not so bad then.
Three games, a win, a draw and a loss.
Injuries are already becoming a problem, though. In some areas I’m very thinly spread. I haven’t been able to buy a single player, so I’m having to go the loan route.

Two more friendlies down, a win and a loss. This does not bode well. Every time I’ve played a Football Manager game before I’ve struggled badly if I’ve not won all the pre-season friendlies.
Still, I’ll give it a go and see what happens.

And the final score…
Ebbsfleet 2 – Shrewsbury 0.
Woo, and indeed, hoo.
It could be seen as a slightly unfair score line, as we just had two shots, both of which went in, against Shrewbury’s fifteen shots, of which eleven were on target. But you can’t argue with the result.

This is my Christmas present to myself, as it got cheap recently. I was meant to be keeping it for Christmas Day, but I had a horrible morning involving a broken car, the AA and and a garage, so I thought I’d cheer myself up by starting this.
I’ve not done too much so far. I’ve taken over at Ebbsfleet United. I seem to be lacking a bit on the left of midfield, but the paltry £3K transfer budget and strict wage limits mean I’ve not been able to get any new blood into the club yet. I set myself up with a nice attacking 4-4-2 formation, as my best midfielders seems to be of the attacking variety.
After all the set up, I went into my first friendly, against Shrewsbury. (It’s not very glamourous down in the arse end of professional football.) I’m 1-0 up, after a nice goal from Mark de Bolla (if I’m remembering the name correctly) just before half time. I’ve been very lucky, though. That was my only shot, I think, whereas Shrewsbury have had about eight shots, most of which have been on target. My goalkeeper’s really been saving us.
I definitely need to have a look at moving back to a more traditional 4-4-2, I think, given how many chances the opposition are getting, but I’m not sure if it’ll suit my players.
I’ve got a feeling it’s going to be a tough season ahead.

So, to recap, after failing to save Bishops Stortford from relegation, I found myself jobless. Eventually Gateshead offered me a short-term contract asking me to get them promoted from the Conference North. Wasn’t too hopeful, but took the job anyway…
And, gosh, what a difference! For one thing, they’ve got some players worth more than £2,000. Somehow, just before I arrived, they even managed to buy someone worth £20,000 from a League Two side. He is amazing. I’ve played two games with Gateshead so far and he’s scored four times and the media are falling over themselves to praise him. If he stays free of injury we’re home free… but that’s hardly likely over the whole season. At Stortford I was fairly lucky with the injuries until the end of the season, where three key players were out for a couple of months.
Just the quality of the footie on display is amazing. I’m seeing runs and teamwork and pace that I never, ever saw while managing football. It’s like the match engine’s been upgraded between seasons.
Anyway, this is the best (C/F)M game ever, I’m confident in saying.

Gateshead have offered my a short-term contract, based on me managing to get them promoted. Ha!
I doubt I’ll have any luck, but it’s something to do until I inevitably get sacked again.
I even applied for a job managing Maesteg before Gateshead stepped in. Maesteg!

That’s it.
Failure.
Injuy piled upon injury and the season came to a terrible end.
Relegated out of the Conference South.
Oh.

We’re now bottom and the injuries are ridiculous. I was down to ten men after three – three! – players had to go off in my last game.
I don’t honestly think I can turn this around in the time left.
There aren’t any decent players available to loan, my players aren’t performing and all seems completely hopeless right now.
Just when everything needed to go right things got even worse.
If I hadn’t vowed to stay to the end of the season I’d be resigning right now. Mind you, the board are putting out so many press releases saying that my job’s safe that I’ve started to get nervous.
