Everybody’s Golf: World Tour (PS3)
Apr 29th
Another game from Goozex that I had to test out before leaving feedback. The install was lengthy, I played an “Advanced Shots” tournament, which I won by miles, then I went to the online section to get the latest updates. Left it on overnight, got up at half five to feed the cat, checked the download had completed, which it had – but then it started another one, which was, luckily, done by the time I got up for good at eight o’clock. Hey ho. Anyway, from what I played it seems just as good as I’d expect.

Wow. Chapter seven is when things start getting serious, then.
It’s a pretty epic battle. There’s a huge tank that’s covered in guns and which you can only hit during certain turns, which is hard enough. But after you do some damage to the tank, Severina (I think that’s here name) turns up – and she can kill all my troops without any effort whatsoever. What had been a reasonably easy battle – after one attempt during which I got completely killed very early due to not knowing what the heck was going on – became a real struggle for survival.
Vyse had to run round the battlefield rescuing fallen soldiers while my tank tried to keep between him and Severina so he didn’t die, while my tank and remaining lancers concentrated on the enemy tank. Any spare CP went to bringing more troops on to the battlefield.
It was touch and go, but I managed not to lose anyone permanently. Vyse was the only “dead” soldier on the battlefield at the end of the battle, but it seems that winning the battle counts as a rescue. Phew.
Anyway, the hero of the battle was Walter, whose anti-armour potential meant that I managed to destroy the tank. One more turn and I’d probably have been toast.
So, I ended up with a B rank and a whole lot of money and experience to spend. Hooray!
I’ve become quite attached to some of my troops. Vyse, Walter, Dallas and Melville are all favourites of mine, for reasons I couldn’t really explain.

Two battles last night. I had two hour-long sessions, so I didn’t think I had the time to get stuck into chapter seven, so I first did a side mission – The Vegetable Incident. A great change of pace, this was a night-time operation with only three characters sneaking through a village to take out some tanks that were blocking a trade route. As well as the darkness and the limited squad, the other change was that one person being taken down meant mission failure. The first time I tried the mission I died about two-thirds of the way through the village, after coming across an unexpected gun emplacement and trying to take it out by, er, running at it with a character on half health. That was an idiotic move and I paid for it.
The second time I tried I used Largo to take down the gun emplacement from afar, then moved in on the tanks. Unfortunately, I’d wrongly assumed I’d taken out all the enemies bar the tanks and that I was well-hidden in some grass, so I was surprised by an enemy shocktrooper throwing a grenade at my guys and knocking them out of cover. I just managed to survive until my turn and with my three command points I got Welkin to kill the enemy trooper, then got Largo to take out the two tanks with two shots. Job done. Phew.
So, that’s the first mission I’ve had to redo. Entirely my fault – and I was very lucky to finish it off the second time I tried. I must try to be less careless. I have a feeling that any carelessness is going to be heavily punished in missions to come.
For my second session I decided to tackle the third skirmish map, which is basically a replay of the woodland mission I’d done in the story previously. This time things went better, as nobody died permanently, but it was a bit messy. I tried using a sniper only to discover a fence in his way and spent far too long dithering over how best to approach the southern enemy camp. Still, the final assault on the eastern camp was beautiful. I’d already taken out the tank there – thanks Walter! – and stormed in from all directions. I concentrated on approaching from the rear to soften things up, then took out a couple more guys from the west, than ran a shocktrooper down from the northern entrance to mop things up and take the camp. Lovely.

A desert battle. Once again, I chose the right troops but positioned them badly, ending up with two scouts on a ridge overlooking the battlefield and two snipers standing at ground level with limited views. Oops.
I had a hard time at first, being seemingly unable to advance. But after getting a sniper up on the ridge and few scouts running around causing trouble, I managed to clear a lot of enemies away and take the first enemy camp. After that, it all went my way. I distracted the enemy with my tank (with an engineer running along behind to repair damage every turn) while a small force consisting of Alicia, Largo, Vyse and, er, one of my other shocktroopers went up and around, coming into second the enemy camp from behind and killing all their defenders before claiming the camp.
And that was that. Job done. Hooray!

Well, golly.
Had an epic battle this morning. It was the chapter five fight and I had to take out an enemy supply base in some woods. I chose a reasonably good set of soldiers for the fight but unfortunately, not knowing what was ahead, I positioned them badly. I won in the end, but it was hairy. Several scouts were knocked out and I only rescued them by the skin of my teeth and my shocktropper Alex died permanently. On the plus side, though, Vyse was an absolute hero in his solo raid to take out an anti-tank gun and Largo and Dallas made a great team when it came to getting behind the tank in the enemy’s main camp.
So, yes, I won, but I think I only got a D rank, I think.
I then bought some new cut scenes, read all the background information I’ve unlocked so far and tried to do the first skirmish map in one turn. Turns out it’s very easy to do using two CP with a single scout at level five.
Brilliant game. Just brilliant.

Right, what is going on?
I’m normally one of the “Games are meant to be played! A pox on cut scenes!” brigade – but in Valkyria Chronicles I’m paying in-game money for more cut scenes. Yes, you heard me. I’m spending my money on more cut scenes.
It’s all very strange.
And I played for an hour so before my wife woke up, then told her about the cut scenes I’d seen and even replayed one for her.
Bizarre.
Oh, and I also played some actual game this morning. Didn’t do a new story mission, but played through a couple of skirmishes. Excellent fun.

An Easter weekend seems to be a good time to start a time-consuming game you’ve been wanting to play, but haven’t started because you don’t think you have enough time to devote to it.
So, then, Valkyria Chronicles. Lots and lots of cut scenes, an interesting story with likeable characters, some of the most gorgeous graphics ever seen and, when you’re not watching cut scenes or fiddling with your squad and weapons, some incredibly fun turn-based strategy battles that don’t feel quite like any other game.
I’ve put in about four hours so far and I’ve been loving it. I don’t even mind all the cut scenes, for some reason. I think it’s just because I’m starting to care about what’s going on, even if the main character is a bit too good to be true.
SingStar (PS3)
Apr 5th
Spent a fun Saturday evening with SingStar, my wife and a bottle of Jack Daniels. We only spent five pounds in the store – a very tight limit, as there were about twelve songs we felt we really needed – but that was five pounds well spent. It turns out I can’t sing The Ramones, but I rock at Pull Shapes by The Pipettes. Well, as much as I rock anything.
Since we last played, those nice chaps at Sony have added the ability to swap in PS2 SingStar discs, so we had fun going through the old 90s and Rock Ballads discs. They fit in seamlessly, it’s just a shame that you can’t copy the tracks into the library on your hard disc. There’s a very obvious reason for that limitation, though.

No better technically than the 360 version. Looks exactly the same to my eyes.

Spent far longer than I intended to playing this last night. Kept eating and growing and giving myself a tiny butt, then a tiny head. Just messing around, gloriously.
