N+ seems to have made me rubbish at Mr Driller. I was trying to 1,500m stage and kept dying stupid deaths. Didn’t really get anywhere at all. Still, it’s Mr Driller, so it’s not like I didn’t enjoy myself.

So, I hadn’t quite finished everything in this game. There are some extra Atari Bonus levels you can only unlock with a code. I used the code and now wish I hadn’t bothered, as some of the Atari levels are stupidly difficult. I thought I’d seen difficult levels already, looks like I was wrong.
I don’t think I’ll bother trying to finish off this set, which will leave the game in an annoying state where I’ve completed it, but haven’t really.

COM-BLOODY-PLETED!
Nlightenment achieved, gold ninja unlocked, credits rolling.
Phew.

Hooray, I finally unlocked the Pinata Decoy last night. Now Pester won’t be so much of a problem. I wish he wouldn’t come round every single game day, though. It’s a bit much.
I spent a while farming snap dragons last night to build up a reserve of cash, so I can afford to buy all the Decoys that I’m going to need.

Ack! I thought I’d complete it, but after finishing episode 39 five more episodes were unlocked. I’ve had a go of all them. One was easy, but all the rest have a mix of incredibly easy and incredibly difficult levels.

Well, I got through the Creature stage without looking up and down. Made a few friends, but I mainly just ate everyone.
Then did the Tribal stage, which involved me killing and eating most species, but just killing the sentient ones. I’d have eaten them happily if the game had let me.
I am not a very nice species.
I’ve just got to the Civilization stage. The game wouldn’t let me save my City Hall until I just stacked three simple blocks on top of each other. Any doors, windows or extra stuff and it gave an error message. Nothing useful, just an unhelpful one saying the building couldn’t be saved. It did let me make an excellent car after that, though.
And then I had to stop playing.
If anyone wants to see my stuff, add “therev” to your buddy list.

Just episode 39 left to do now. I hope it isn’t too hard. The previous few have been fairly easy – except for level 38-4, which was horrid.

A botched attempt to quietly kidnap a Universal Petroleum led to them hating my guts, so I had to destroy buildings occupied by the Venezuelan army to get them back on side. Then I attempted to kidnap an army general for the guerillas, which nearly went okay, but the helicopter I called in to come and collect him got shot down and fell on his head. Oops. I took a photo of the corpse to prove he was dead, so passed the mission, but only got half the cash. Ah well.

Level 29-0, which I spent five or six hours on without success, just took me about ten minutes after leaving the game for a week or so.
Um, fair enough.
I didn’t even do anything different – well, except the whole “not dying” thing.

Do you miss the halcyon days of 2005, when every 360 game looked like an upscaled PS2 game? Well then rejoice! You can relive that era with Mercenaries 2, now available in shops!
I’m glad I’m not a reviewer, because objectively and technically the game’s all a bit rubbish. Looks like an upscaled PS2 game, has about five lines of dialogue, enemy AI is… limited, etc.
However, despite all that stuff, it’s completely awesome and kept me completely enthralled for a six-hour session today. Stuff goes BOOM! and people fall over and jeeps fly through the sky and buildings collapse and it’s amazing. Also, the lack of challenge doesn’t hurt it for me. I like it being easy, so I can just storm through like a terminator – and I’ve failed missions now and again, so it’s not like you’re completely invincible.
And I think I just used up my entire year’s quota of “WHOA! DID YOU SEE THAT?!” moments.
Think Just Cause hollowed out and stuffed with the spirit of EDF, or something.
