Burnout Paradise (360)
May 2nd
A couple of Achievements this morning, one for getting my A licence, one for finding all the parking garages. Annoyingly, according to my stats screen, there’s still one gas station I’ve not found. I wonder where that could be?

Spent some time trying out three of the legendary cars. They’re fun. I love the General Lee… sorry, Cavalry Bootlegger. It’s got the correct horn noise and everything. Perfect for doing huge jumps. I won a few more events, too, so I’m getting close to getting my A-class licence.
I wish I could remember how the stunt stuff works, though. I’m having real trouble with that. I’m not sure if there are extra controls when you’re in the air, or if it’s just a question of hitting jump after jump, or something else. Got some great takedowns with the Nighthawk, mind. I think Road Rage events are probably my favourite.

Had a quick twenty minutes on this last night. Bombed around, jumped through some billboards, failed a Road Rage event, had a great time. (Even though it kept popping up messages telling me how good Dimrill is at the game at every opportunity.)

I traded this in over a year ago, then missed it greatly. Only now has it become cheap enough for me to get a new copy. I downloaded the 1.7 update during the day, so it was ready for me to go in the evening. It felt great to be back, it really did. I tried out the bikes – which I think I love – then jumped back into a car and did a few races. Won a few, then lost one after the AI shunted me down a side road going completely the wrong way.
I wish I understood Burning Routes better. I get the concept, but I’m never sure what the point of them is, or the exact difference between online and offline times are. I’m sure it’s very simple, but I’m not very bright.
Also, the moment it started up it gave me an Achievement called “Watt?” before I’d even started playing, so I need to go and check what that was about.

I’m half-way through my B licence now. I might have got further, but I keep just driving around aimlessly. Well, not quite aimlessly. There’s still one gas station I’ve not found and I’d really like to find it. I’ve no idea where it could be.
Just before turning off the game I got the Parallel Parking Achievement, which was surprisingly easy. Either that or I fluked it.

This is great, but I’m having trouble with the online side of things. I’ve not even tried to play online yet, but the leaderboards seem to take an age to update, I can’t seem to find world-wide boards (just friends only), I’ve had several “Can’t connect to Burnout Paradise server” messages and once the game just got stuck on a “Connecting to Burnout Paradise server” screen and I had to leap back to the dashboard and restart.
Other than that it’s almost all good. The only real problem with the single player mode is navigation. The only reason I ever lose a race is because I’ve taken a wrong turn, which is very easy to do at high speed. Also, I miss Crash mode. Showtime is fun (and I soundly beat SomethingWitty on one road), but it’s no substitute.
So, it’s a new Burnout, then. Which means having a whole host of complaints about things they’ve changed and EA’s servers. Give it a while and everyone will consider it a classic… just in name for the next Burnout out to come along and start the cycle over again.
