Doom Resurrection (iPhone)
Aug 17th
An update to this game came out at the weekend. It added forty challenges – e.g. get a high score on a level, do a level in a certain time, etc. – and a brand new map.
Golly.
I’m not sure why iPhone games get all these bonus updates after release, but I’m not complaining. Anyone who thought that this game was low on content when it was released – a claim I refute – has less cause for complaint now.
It’s also, as I type, still £1.79 instead of the normal price of £5.99. Given that it’s easily worth six quid, if you don’t buy it when it’s on sale… well, you’re being a bit silly.
I finished off the story at the weekend, then tried the extra content. The challenges seem to be aptly named, as I failed the first one, despite only mucking up in one spot. Also, though it’s really nice having these challenges, would it not have been possible to strip the story sequences out of the levels? It’s very odd for a challenge to be interrupted by out-of-context dialogue.
I also tried out the new map.
It’s excellent. Enemies always appear in the same places but, unlike the main game maps, it’s random which enemy types appear in which spots. So on one go you can have imps flinging fireballs at you and on another zombies might be firing assault rifles. It makes a bit difference and it’s pretty great.
It’s also very hard – I’ve hardly managed to get anywhere, even on the easiest difficulty setting.
So, yes, all in all, though the challenges don’t appear to be perfect, one of the best games on the App Store just got better.

Another level done in bed last night. It was awesome. Playing on the lowest difficult level, as I am, I find myself often close to death, but I’ve only died once so far. It’s a good balance for me, I think. There’s danger if I’m careless, but if I keep my wits about me, I’m not going to suddenly find myself in a heap on the floor.
It’s really very playable indeed and while the story is completely unnecessary, it doesn’t get in the way too much.
I think I’ve been playing this in a good way by making it a special game that I keep for occasions where I can do it justice and not taking it too fast. I think it’s well worth the six quid price tag, but I can imagine that if you were to buy it and then blow through it one extended sitting you might not feel the same way.

Finally played this again last night. You may have noticed that I’ve not been playing it, despite paying the huge price of £5.99 for the game. There’s a reason for that. It’s not that it’s a bad game. It’s not that there are better games on my iPhone – there may be, but Doom Resurrection’s up there near the top even if it’s not the absolute best.
No, the reason I’ve not been playing it is because I want to do it justice. I want to be sitting in the right position and be able to have sound on – and loud. (For the record, I mostly play iPhone games without sound, or just on the quietest setting, which is why you’ll normally hear me talking about graphics and gameplay a lot more than I mention the sound.) Doom seems to deserve the best treatment I can give it, short of actually using headphones – though I may do that some time.
So, last night I played through what I think was the third level. It was brilliant. Great controls, great presentation, shooting of maximum fun and, well, it’s got that lovely Doomness about it. I love Doom. Even Doom 3, yes. A new enemy type was introduced, along with a favourite old weapon…
Er, that’s a chainsaw, by the way. You probably can’t tell from that picture.
Come get some!

Five pounds and ninety-nine pence. I’ll repeat that. Five pounds and ninety-nine pence. Now I’ll put a screenshot thing in to break up the text and provide for a brief pause and then repeat myself again.
Five pounds and ninety-nine pence. Now, we could talk endlessly about how the pricing of games on the App Store is a good or bad thing. We could mention that £5.99 is cheaper than most XBLA games these days. The fact is, though, that six quid for a game on the App Store is an absolute fortune. It’s some premium shit, if you will.
So, does Doom Resurrection do anything to justify the hefty price tag, apart from using the Doom name?
Well, I can’t really tell yet. I’ve only played the first two levels. However, I can say that it looks incredible, the controls are interesting and I’ve very much enjoyed my brief time with it. If it was, say, a £2.99 game I’d be urging you to go out and buy it right now – but is it really worth ten 59p games? Only time will tell and I simply haven’t played it enough yet.
But I’m really, really looking forward to getting back to it, if that means anything. I am a complete Doom whore, though. I even loved Doom 3 – loved it, I say! And I’m not sorry!

Another game I played on my sparkling new NC10 last night. Ran fine, as you’d expect, but I had trouble with the controls. Doom was wonderful before all those extra keys got shoved into the bottom row of the keyboard.
Again, though, my slumped position probably didn’t help.

Just a quick play while some demos downloaded. There’s still nothing to beat the Doom shotgun for sheer kill satisfaction.

Decided to see if I could get the Nightmare achievement, which you get for completing any level on Nightmare difficulty. This Ultimate Doom, which added a shortcut on the very first level, so it wasn’t very difficult.

Just checking that this has stood the test of time, given it only made it to number 57 in rllmuk’s top hundred games. It’s brilliant, but it’s very tough. Not sure what difficulty level my save game is on, but I’m getting my arse kicked.

Completed the level I’d left it on months ago, but didn’t make any headway into the one after that. Cacodemons and those flying skulls are the worst things ever.
Still, best game ever? Yes.

A couple more levels completed.
Annoyingly, I seem to have lost my 360 headset – I’m sure it’s around… somewhere – and my wireless controller has developed an annoying clicking sound when I move it back and to the right. Movement still feels fine so far, but the clicking noise sounds very wrong and gets into my brain and makes me want to kill things.
So Doom’s quite good for that, really.
