Lumines Lite (iPhone)

Tried the demo another couple of times.
The controls simply don’t work properly.
I’ve tried hints and tips from people who say they do, such as only swiping down the right hand side of the screen or whatever, but that doesn’t help.
It’s just broken. So glad I didn’t spend any money on it.

It’s Lumines.
On the iPhone.
I normally play with the sound off, but that would be doing Lumines a disservice, so I hooked it up to my car stereo to play this morning. Sounded nice, looks okay, if a little “dirty” compared to the PSP version, controls like a car with two flat tyres.
Well, no, that’s slightly unfair, it controls like a car with one slightly flat tyre. It mostly works, but doesn’t quite respond as it should. Which, for Lumines, is a major, major failing. More than most other falling blocks games it relies on precision and timing – and they’re not possible in this version.
It did start feeling more comfortable as I played more, but it never felt quite right. I’ll have to play it some more, see if the controls click at any point, but it’s not looking good.
Also, the “full” version of the game only costs £1.79, but it seems to be very light on content and set up for masses of in-app purchases in the future, so beware. There’s already one extra paid-for skin for download, apparently.

Works suprisingly well on a tiny keyboard without sound. As a puzzle game it’s good enough to stand up when you take away the presentation. Still, I’m not sure I can bear to buy it again. I’ve bought it twice on the PSP and once on the 360 already.

Played a few of the different Challenge packs today and unlocked quite a few new skins. Which would be really nice if I ever used Skin Edit mode.

I downloaded the new charity pack, which consists of four very nice skins.
I then went back to the Base pack to try and improve my score, but failed. I’m never going to see all the skins and get the achievements. Bah.

I’d like slightly shorter games, I think. Playing for half an hour and not getting close to a high score isn’t much fun. Well, the playing part is fun, but I tend to get a little disgruntled when I die.

I think the leaderboards may have been reset overnight, as I don’t think my score of 80K should really have got me to 32nd in the world…

Been playing a bit of this to get my Lumines fix while my wife’s playing Harvest Moon on the TV.
I’m really not very good.

I wish this wasn’t so good, so I could have boycotted it due to the price structure.
I am, however, weak in the face of genius.
So, Lumines bought. And advance pack bought, too.
