Test Drive Unlimited (PSP)
May 9th
Hooray! I’ve got 250,000 points, so I’ve gone up a level.
Still using my Pontiac GTO, but I might buy myself a Class C car tomorrow. Actually, I just won an AC 427, whatever that is, so I should see if that’s any good before splashing out any cash.
One of the nice things about this game is that I’m beating cars that are better and faster than mine, unlike Gran Turismo where I have to make sure I have a better car than the opposition.

Well, I’ve exhausted the Class E challenges, I think, so it’s on to Class D. I did win a Class D Cadillac, but it was a bit frisky for my tastes – no, really, a frisky Cadillac – so I went and bought myself a Pontiac GTO instead. I’ve not done any events in it yet, just driven it from the dealer to the tuning shop, but it seems lovely.

Hooray, I’m now an Amateur. Not quite sure what that means, think it’s just more races being open to me.
I think I’m actually going to have a read of the manual. Shocking, I know.
Test Drive Unlimited (PSP)
May 7th
This is excellent. I’ve played for a while this morning and driven over a hundred miles in my first car – a Ford Mustang – and I’ve had a very good time. It is Test Drive Unlimited as it was on the 360, pretty much. There’s an obvious downgrade in the graphics and sound, of course. It’s very, very impressive, but obviously the PSP isn’t going to have high-def, high-poly graphics and booming surround sound. So no dashboard view, for one thing. Apart from that, the only other major difference I’ve seen so far is the handling. It seems much, much easier to get round corners in the PSP version and it’s consequently a lot more fun. There’s not the same feeling as learning your car and constantly driving on the edge, but I think the fun to be had screaming round corners as soon as you get in a car makes up for that.
There’s also a nice feature I don’t remember from the 360 version, which is that the GPS automatically points you towards the next race after you finish an event. Makes it a lot easier to find things to do. And if you decide to go somewhere else then once you’ve been there the GPS will set tiself back to te next race. Lovely. But, you know, a few days ago I thought Ninja Gaiden was a 360 game, so my memory’s not to be trusted.
There are also a lot of (to me) minor downgrades. No bikes, no delivery missions, that sort of thing. I think there might be fewer cars too. I can’t say I’m too bothered. My main wish for the game would be for the sun to come out. It’s awfully grey for Hawaii at the moment.
TOCA Race Driver 3 Challenge (PSP)
May 4th
I really like having fewer games since my big PS3-funding clearout. I like the focus it gives my games collection. However, I didn’t trade in any handheld games, because they tend to be imports. I do have some UK handheld releases and I’m wondering which of those I could use as trade-in fodder now my gaming budget is approximately zero.
TOCA won’t be one of them. When I started it up I was all over the road and it’s taken me over half an hour of trying to even finish the race I was on when I last played this. And that was only in fourth place. However, despite a framerate that’s far worse than I remember, it really does have a handling model that makes driving a complete joy.
I really need to work out the best way to get rid of the import games I no longer need.
Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection (PSP)
Mar 28th
Awwwww. I’ve been playing through the modes I need to post a score in to get an online ranking and I’ve come to Command Attack. This gives you a move to do, followed by another, and another, and another… etc. You get the idea. Unfortunately, I can’t do a lot of the moves. I don’t have the kind of brain that can perform a ten hit aerial combat. I just don’t.
I’m a bit upset now.

While my wife played this on the PS3, I played the PSP version. Doesn’t look as pretty, but there’s more to do. I got through the first dojo with Jack-5 and then updated my ghost online. Maybe one day people will be able to download it and beat me up, while laughing at the ineptitude.
Valkyrie Profile Lenneth (PSP)
Mar 11th
Well, I’ve finished the first chapter now. I gave all the artefacts I got to Odin and sent up one completely levelled character, so I got a got a rating. I’m still not quite sure that I know what I’m doing, but I think I’m doing okay.
And I’m having a lot of fun and the little stories between dungeons are very well done. I’m not surprised it built a reputation as a lost classic after its appearance on the Playstation.

I’ve had this RPG for quite some time, but today was the first day that I felt I was in the right frame of mind to give it the patience I was sure it would deserve. I was right, it does require patience at the beginning. There’s about an hour or so of very limited interaction before you really get to do anything. (It’s one of those games with save points during cut scenes.)
But now I have got to play it I’m very impressed. I’m four hours in and I’ve worked out what’s going on mostly, I think. I can heal during battle, I’ve worked out how learn new skills and level them, all that. Haven’t been able to use an item during battle yet, but maybe I’ve not got any yet. A lot of this isn’t explained very well, or at all. But it’s great fun, with a lovely battle system and enemies visible in the (side-scrolling) dungeons before you fight.

Yep, that first boss in PS2 Adventure mode goes down without trouble every time now.
I just can’t work out how to avoid the second (and final) boss’s attacks, though.
